"And if there come the singers and the dancers and the flute players, buy of their gifts also.

For they too are gatherers of fruit and frankincense, and that which they bring, though fashioned of dreams, is raiment and food for your soul." -The Prophet Khalil Gibran

Saraka! a jazzy music meal
Saraka! is a new production by Karlene Marie Soprano Songstress that takes its inspiration from a Caribbean immigrant mama’s name for day-old food mixed with a fresh, simple ingredient to bring one nourishing, completely delicious and affordable, new meal to the family table.
The inaugural event Saraka! A jazzy musical meal happened during African Heritage Month, February 26, 2023, from 7:00 - 9:30 pm LIVE at The Carleton in Halifax, Nova Scotia with Karlene Marie (vocals) and the four-piece combo of Silvio Pupo (keys), Jeff Torbert (guitar), Kyle Tully (bass) and Andrew Miller (drums).

The creativity of Saraka! is celebrated through the songs of prolific, inspirational artists of which Karlene chose 26 to share, 18 that she performed in the show leaving others to mix-in for the next time.

The musical menu consists of feel good jazz and other tasty genre-adjacent songs from eras past and present made legendary by African-American composers and interpreters including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Esperanza Spaulding, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Donny Hathaway, Anita Baker, k-os, Stevie Wonder and more.
